SEK International School-Costa Rica opened its doors in 1988. The principal at that time was Don Luis Martinez Zorzo. The school began with seven groups from Pre-school to Fifth Grade.
Due to the fast growth, in 1990 more classrooms had to be built to gather new students who had joined the school. In 1991, the actual land in Cipreses, Curridabat was purchased to start building the school. Its construction began in 1992. On May 17, the school completely moved to its new campus. An official ceremony was held on June 12, 1995. The school continued growing, so during that summer the swimming pool, the dressing rooms and more classrooms were built. In 1999, both a volleyball and a basketball court were added to this modern campus. And in 2013, the gym was finally built.
